Psychology

Psychology began life as 'the study of the soul' before settling into its modern definition: the study of behaviour and mental processes. This book traces that shift as a continuous narrative, moving from Socrates and Descartes through to Sigmund Freud and Daniel Dennett, and on to the findings of functional MRI scanning. Rather than treating psychology as a fixed body of facts, it follows the changing ways we have tried to understand the core of our own being.
