The Daughter of Nature

Subha cannot speak, but she has her own way of talking to the world - to the river, the moon, and the cows in the shed she loves. The trouble is, the people around her rarely understand her, and their teasing follows her even after she is married and still feels utterly alone. Her story is one of eighteen tales in this collection, rewritten in English from Tagore's original Bengali, moving between love, sadness, happiness and longing while offering a glimpse into the customs and social life of an older India.
