The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes

Holmes and Watson return for a second series of twelve intriguing cases. Among them is The Adventure of Silver Blaze, home to the famous 'curious incident of the dog in the night-time', and The Adventure of the Gloria Scott, where guilt seems to point squarely at a man found with a smoking pistol in his hand. The Adventure of the Crooked Man stands apart as the only story in which Holmes ever utters the word 'elementary'. The collection closes on a darker note, with Holmes's fatal encounter with the arch-criminal Moriarty in The Final Problem.
