The Woman in White

On a moonlit road outside London, Walter Hartright is stopped by a woman dressed entirely in white, asking directions and clearly in distress. Moments later, a carriage passes in pursuit of her - she has escaped from an asylum. That brief encounter sets off a story of abduction, madness, false identity and buried family secrets, as Walter is drawn deeper into a mystery he cannot walk away from. First published in 1860, this is both a classic Victorian sensation novel and an early work of detective fiction, and one that has remained continuously in print ever since.
